On Tuesday, the dollar lost 0.3%, reflecting a decline in Treasury yields amid increasing uncertainty about the timing and size of monetary easing this year. The Federal Reserve is currently expected to keep interest rates unchanged in March and May, but there is a 55% chance that the central bank will cut borrowing costs by 25 basis points in June. Investors are also looking to the U.S. Purchasing Managers’ Index reports this week for evidence of how well the private sector is adapting to current conditions. The dollar declined across all sectors, with notable selling activity against the Australian and New Zealand dollars.

Cryptocurrencies:

The UK seeks to enact new rules for the cryptocurrency market.

The UK government plans to enact new rules governing stablecoins and transaction verification services related to crypto assets (staking services) – already approved – within the next six months, amid growing pressure to present specific proposals before the upcoming general elections. The Secretary of the Treasury’s economic department, Bim Afolami, stated during a cryptocurrency event hosted by Coinbase in London on Monday that the government is “pushing hard” for legislation. The Treasury Department first committed in October to provide more clarity on specific areas of cryptocurrencies by sometime in 2024. This commitment followed previous discussions about stablecoins backed by fiat currency reserves to maintain a fixed value for digital currency against traditional currencies like the dollar or pound. This also comes after the enactment of a major law on financial services and markets last summer.

Oil:

Oil declines for the second consecutive session.

Brent crude futures fell to less than $82 per barrel on Wednesday, following a 1.5% loss in the previous session driven by concerns about interest rates and uncertainty about demand outweighing geopolitical concerns. An International Energy Agency report highlighted the global slowdown in oil demand due to the increasing popularity of renewable energy sources. Investors eagerly await the OPEC+ decision in March on whether to extend production cuts in the next quarter. Recent data indicated that Iraq, the second-largest producer in the group, exceeded its production quota. On the positive side, Russia achieved its goal of reducing exports in January as part of its commitment to the group. In light of these developments, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed responsibility for targeting two American ships with missiles in the Gulf of Aden, raising concerns about disruptions to shipping routes in the region.
