Expectations had pointed to a slowdown to 2% from 2.2% in April,
But the decline was more substantial than anticipated.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, fell to 2.4% compared to 2.7% the previous month.
Inflation in the services sector, which the ECB closely monitors, also declined to 3.2% from 4% in April,
reflecting a gradual easing of price pressures within the sector.

In a related development, the Eurozone unemployment rate dropped to 6.2% in April,
compared to 6.3% in March and 6.4% a year earlier.

Unemployment across the EU remained stable at 5.9%, indicating a resilient labor market amid economic challenges.
